Michael leads the firm’s dynamic Real Estate + Finance team, which has earned acclaim from international rating publications, including the client-focused Chambers USA, highlighting the practice’s reputation as “counsel to heavyweight developers.” Honored as one of the leading real estate attorneys in the state himself, he is similarly heralded by Super Lawyers and The Best Lawyers in America for his high-profile work in Ohio’s booming market.
As outside general counsel to many of the fastest growing and most recognizable developers in the state, Michael works with business owners, development teams, and in-house counsel to create and grow strategic project portfolios. Michael focuses his practice in the areas of real estate, business and tax. He joined Kegler Brown in 2012.
Real Estate
Michael's real estate practice includes advising clients in the acquisition, development, disposition, leasing and financing of residential and commercial properties. As Chair of the Real Estate + Finance practice, his range of knowledge and experience allows Michael to guide his clients from the beginning stages of establishing holding entities, drafting and negotiating purchase contracts, to advising on title, survey and environmental issues during the diligence process, and through leasing to tenants in a completed development.
Michael regularly represents property owners and tenants in lease drafting and negotiations. His leasing experience ranges from advising a startup in securing its first space, to assisting established businesses expanding nationwide, and negotiating leases on behalf of institutional landlords. He also assists property owners in drafting standard form leases for use in developments.
Business + Tax
Another aspect of Michael’s practice focuses on taxation issues affecting businesses and individuals, and he not only counsels these clients on issues related to tax valuations, contract drafting and negotiation, and business formation, structuring, and tax, but also practices before county boards of revision and the state board of tax appeals in valuation matters. He also advises and represents clients involved in the tax controversy process, assisting with planning, compliance, assessment, appeals and resolution.
Global Business
Mike works closely with the firm’s core global business team on both inbound and outbound projects. For companies headquartered abroad looking at the United States for real estate development and investment, he helps them understand the legal and tax implications of a variety of corporate structuring, financing, lease and purchase options. Mike also works with U.S.-based clients in planning and executing trade and investment strategies abroad.
