Young Lawyers Breakfast Panel: Public Service in Columbus and D.C.

Federalist Society's 2024 Ohio Conference

On Friday, April 12th, Sheila spoke as a panelist at the Federalist Society’s 2024 Ohio Conference. During a panel entitled 'Young Lawyers Breakfast Panel: Public Service in Columbus and D.C.', they discussed why you should work in public service, when you should work in public service, how to navigate between jobs within public service, whether to serve in a political appointment or a career position, how to transition into and out of public service, and how to align your career choices with your personal values and policy views.

In addition to Sheila, the panel consisted of:

  • Tyler Herrmann, General Counsel, Ohio Department of Health; City Councilman, Powell, Ohio; and JAG Officer, U.S. Army.
  • Will Levi, Partner at Sidley, and former Chief of Staff and Senior Counselor to the Attorney General, U.S. Department of Justice.
  • Amanda Neely, Of Counsel at Gibson Dunn, and former General Counsel to Senator Rob Portman.
  • Jason Manion, Assistant U.S. Attorney, Northern District of Ohio (Moderator).

Sheila specifically spoke about what it’s like to work as an attorney in government and offered advice to young lawyers interested in serving in such a capacity. Having transitioned full-time into private practice at our firm in January of 2023, Sheila provided insight on some of the differences between private practice and government service.

The conference was a full-day event held annually in Columbus. Other panels at the conference included all six Ohio Supreme Court candidates running in the 2024 General Election discussing their views on the role of the judiciary. The event is attended by attorneys from across the state.
