On May 12th, 2026, Tom Pannett presented during the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and ODOT 2026 Partnering Conference. His presentation, AI + the Future of Highway Design: Opportunity, Risk + Responsibility, detailed the current technological shift occurring in the engineering field and explored both the opportunities and risks involved in AI engineering design. Tom looked at several examples of AI’s use in the design and construction of highways, what legal questions engineers need to be asking, and key issues related to AI use and governance, emphasizing that engineers remain responsible for final judgements.
