Mr. Weber will discuss the responsibilities lawyers must maintain when interacting with future clients. There has been much in the news about attorneys and their responsibilities owed to potential clients and this overview will provide the ethical rules in the context of recent case studies.

9:30 a.m. - Best Practices: Tips to Avoid Ethical and Malpractice Traps; Rasheeda Khan and Christopher Weber

In today’s legal environment, it’s important to understand the potential traps that come with representing clients. Ms. Khan and Mr. Weber will discuss the methods that have proven to consistently work in combating ethical and malpractice traps.

10:45 a.m. - #Legalbloggersbeware: Blogging in the Digital Age; Jason H. Beehler and Kailee M. Goold

Recent cases and professional considerations for lawyers and judges who blog - or plan to blog - on legal topics, including a review of potential rules relevant to content-generating attorneys and how to avoid ethics pitfalls.

11:15 a.m. - Substance Abuse; Joseph Caligiuri

Mr. Caligiuri will discuss matters of substance abuse, the resources available to attorneys suffering from substance abuse and other important thoughts on this critical issue for lawyers.

Speakers

Joseph Caligiuri, Senior Assistant Disciplinary Counsel, Ohio Supreme Court
Joe is a Senior Assistant Disciplinary Counsel for the Supreme Court of Ohio. Joe is responsible for investigating and prosecuting lawyers and judges accused of ethical misconduct. He is a frequent lecturer for the OSBA CLE Institute, the Ohio Judicial College, and is an adjunct professor of law at The Ohio State University, where he teaches Professional Responsibility. Joe was a former prosecutor in Buffalo, NY, and is a graduate of the New England School of Law, Clemson University MBA Program, and the State University of New York at Buffalo. Joe is a member of the OSBA, National Organization of Bar Counsel, and the Association of Judicial Disciplinary Counsel.

Geoffrey Stern
Geoff served as Disciplinary Counsel of the Supreme Court of Ohio, as well as chair of the Ohio State Bar Association’s Committee on Legal Ethics and Professional Conduct. He heads the professional responsibility practice area at Kegler Brown and is a frequent speaker and expert witness on ethics/malpractice. Geoff was selected as Columbus Appellate Lawyer of the Year 2012 and Professional Malpractice Lawyer of the Year 2013 by Best Lawyers in America®.

Christopher Weber
Chris focuses on trial and appellate advocacy in areas of professional responsibility, commercial litigation and corporate governance, and compliance law. He has tried and argued several disciplinary cases to successful conclusions and is a frequent speaker on disciplinary matters.

Rasheeda Khan
Rasheeda focuses on trial and appellate advocacy in areas of commercial litigation, professional responsibility, and criminal defense. She has served as first and second chair on numerous hearings before the Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline, the Board of Commissioners on Character and Fitness, and the Ohio Supreme Court.

Jason H. Beehler
Jason focuses his practice in the areas of commercial and civil litigation. He represents a wide variety of clients at all stages of litigation in state and federal courts, has drafted briefs for cases in Ohio trial and appellate courts, and has drafted briefs for several cases before the Ohio Supreme Court.

Kailee M. Goold
Kailee practices primarily in the areas of litigation and labor and employee relations but also advises clients on issues relating to professional responsibility and attorney discipline. She counsels clients on all aspects of litigation in both state and federal court and represents clients in a wide variety of disputes including trademark, breach of contract, and breach of fiduciary duty actions.
