Engineering Ethics: Here and Across the Globe
Ohio’s Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) June 4, 2024
In his recent webinar hosted by the Ohio LTAP Center, Tom delved into several critical topics concerning the advocacy and ethical standards within the engineering community.
Tom explored the landscape of professional organizations advocating for engineers across the United States and globally, highlighting the diversity of over 50 domestic and 30 international associations. The webinar scrutinized their respective bylaws and constitutions, examining how these groups champion the interests of engineers and comparing their governance with Ohio’s regulations on professional conduct.
Moreover, the session included a sobering analysis of international engineering failures, illustrating instances where ethical principles were compromised. Drawing parallels to Ohio's standards, Tom provided insights into lessons learned from these incidents and their implications for professional practice.
In addition to these discussions, Tom addressed recent guidance from ODOT aimed at reinforcing ethical practices and avoiding conflicts of interest within the industry. Real-world examples were cited to contextualize ODOT’s directives and underscore their impact on engineering practices in Ohio.
