Deepavali, or Diwali, is a multi-day festival where the people of India and of Indian decent light earthen ‘diyas’ (lamps), decorate their houses, and welcome family and friends to their homes for feasting. The lighting of lamps is a way of being thankful for health, wealth, knowledge, peace, valor and fame during this celebration of the Hindu New Year. The light is a metaphor for knowledge and its glow represents a welcoming of illumination, prosperity, health and happiness.
