Humphrey Kweminyi Honored with 2024 New Attorney Pro Bono Award by Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio

Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio (LASCO) recently announced that Humphrey Kweminyi, an associate at Kegler Brown, has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 New Attorney Pro Bono Award. This award recognizes Humphrey's outstanding dedication to providing free legal services to low-income individuals throughout Ohio, and his steadfast commitment to the mission of ensuring equal access to justice for all.

Humphrey will be honored at the Journey Toward Justice Reception on Wednesday, October 23, at 5:30 PM, at the Grange Insurance Audubon Center. This event, held in conjunction with Pro Bono Month, celebrates the invaluable contributions of attorneys, paralegals, law students, and community members who volunteer their time and expertise to support LASCO’s clients. The reception offers an opportunity to acknowledge the remarkable work of volunteers like Humphrey, who continuously advocate for Ohioans facing legal challenges related to housing, public benefits, domestic violence, and economic security.

"Since his time volunteering as a law clerk with us, Humphrey has been a tremendous supporter of our work," said Dianna Parker, Director of Pro Bono & Community Engagement at LASCO. "We are grateful for his sustained contributions through programs like TAP, our Chapter 7 Bankruptcy project, and his service on our board. His commitment to making a difference in the lives of low-income individuals is truly inspiring."

Born and raised in the North-West Region of Cameroon, Humphrey’s journey to becoming an attorney in the U.S. was deeply shaped by his grandfather's protracted legal battles over inherited property. Witnessing the profound impact of pro bono legal services on his family inspired Humphrey to pursue a career in law, with a focus on helping underserved communities.

"My grandfather’s legal struggles and the selflessness of the lawyers who took on his case pro bono left an indelible impression on me," said Kweminyi. "It instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to use my skills to advocate for those who may not have the means to secure representation but deserve justice all the same."

Since joining Kegler Brown in 2021, Humphrey has specialized in global business, corporate law, real estate financing, and creditors' rights. His pro bono work through LASCO, particularly in tenant advocacy and Chapter 7 bankruptcy cases, has allowed him to make a direct impact on the lives of those facing financial and housing crises. His work goes beyond representation, aiming to empower clients with the knowledge and resources they need to navigate complex legal challenges.

The Journey for Justice Reception is an opportunity to celebrate attorneys like Humphrey who exemplify the spirit of giving back to the community through pro bono service. Attendees will enjoy an evening of networking, camaraderie, and heartfelt recognition of the difference these volunteers make in the lives of Ohioans in need.
