Proposal for Changes to India’s Education Sector

Kegler Brown Global Business News

Smart Summary:

  • In February, The Confederation of Indian Industry submitted proposals on attracting foreign institutions and increasing foreign direct investment in education to commerce minister Piyush Goyal, who agreed to the proposal.

Historically, education in India has been a not-for-profit sector with the provision that the surplus generated must be reinvested in to the sector and not distributed. A proposal by the think tank group, The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), may change the way educational institutes operate in India if accepted by the government.

The goal of the progressive proposal is to attract foreign education institutes and foreign direct investment (FDI) in education, allowing for educational institutions to make profits, and to repatriate profits to their own countries. If seriously considered by the government, it could be a game-changer for U.S. universities undertaking collaborations, partnerships, arrangements, setting up of educational institutes in India.
