Ohio's
2006 constitutional amendment raised the state’s minimum wage
level to $6.85/hour. The amendment also provided that the minimum
wage would be recalculated each January, based on the Consumer Price
Index.
The Ohio Department of Commerce has announced that the
new minimum wage in Ohio, effective January 1, 2008, will be $7.00/hour.
Although the federal minimum wage is currently $5.85/hour (increasing
to $6.55/hour next July), that minimum wage will only apply to workers
in Ohio who are not covered by the higher state minimum wage (i.e.,
employees of employers whose annual gross dollar volume is less
than $250,000, as well as 14- and 15-year-old employees).
