As most people know, there is an OSHA general industry safety standard that sets forth requirements for fire safety and evacuation (29 C.F.R. Supbt. 6, App. A). OSHA has issued citations, and penalties, to employers for failure to comply with these standards. The original standard, which was issued in the 1970's, has been updated by OSHA.
OSHA recently issued an "Emergency Exit Routes" fact sheet, which is designed to supplement the newly-issued standard on emergency plans and fire prevention. Another fact sheet, entitled "Fire Safety in the Workplace" also summarizes the fire safety requirements.
The standard and the fact sheets can be obtained at www.osha.gov (go to the link for "Publications/Posters," and then to "Resources - Fact Sheets/Compliance Guides.")
