Carlos Cornejo-Jurgensen

Carlos Cornejo-Jurgensen holds a degree in law from the Universidad Anahuac Law School (1995). He has worked as manager of a real estate firm and also worked in a law firm specialized in penal litigation. Previously, Mr. Cornejo-Jurgensen was an associate with Baker & McKenzie, a law firm. His work experience includes the handling of major projects, such as; the privatization of a major railroad, obtaining project financing structures with World Bank institutions and structuring the deprivatization of a major PEMEX operating division. In addition, he regularly handles general corporate affairs, foreign direct investment, joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions, corporate reorganizations, government acquisitions, environmental protection and copyright or intellectual property law. Mr. Cornejo is a member of the Environment Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce in Mexico. He joined the firm in 1996.

Gisela Keller-Lapayre

Gisela Keller-Lapayre holds a degree in Business Administration from Universidad Iberoamericana (1995). Ms. Keller also has degrees in Harmonized Tariff Classification (1993) and International Business and Foreign Trade (1998). She is fluent in Spanish, English, German, and French. Ms. Keller was a partner at the Makela, S.A. law firm, which specializes in foreign trade, taxes on international transactions and foreign investment; BDO Binder, where she was administrator of the firm's International Business Department, Grupo Cuernavaca, S.A. de C.V.; and Nestlé in Vevey, Switzerland. Her experience includes fiscal consultancy in international transactions and treaties to avoid double taxation, foreign investment, foreign trade, export programs, NAFTA, audits on national value added to the auto industry, the restructuring of international corporate groups, training seminars, personnel supervision and evaluation and direct contact with clients, as well as billing and collections. Ms. Keller has frequently been a speaker at seminars related to her field of expertise, both in Mexico as well as abroad (United States and Canada). At present, she is member of the Committee on International Treaties of the Mexican Public Accountants College. She joined the firm in 2001.

Ricardo León-Santacruz

Ricardo León-Santacruz holds a law degree from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Chihuahua Campus (1995). He holds a master's degree with a specialty in tax law from Georgetown University Law Center (1997). He is an expert translator English/Spanish and Spanish/English, certified by the Tribunal Superior de Justicia of the State of Nuevo León (2000 - ). He was associate assistant general counsel of International Affairs with the Tax Administration Service in México City. He was also a participant with the Latin America Tax Group at the Chicago office of Baker & McKenzie, where he worked for more than five years as an associate. His experience includes international tax planning, international financial transactions, tax treaties, permanent establishment, controlled foreign corporations, corporate restructuring, price transfer, foreign tax credits, real estate and fiduciary planning, expatriate taxes, Mexican corporate taxes, income tax, value added and asset tax. He is also highly experienced in dealing with individuals and corporations, both Mexican and foreign. Mr. León is also a professor of Comparative International Tax Law in the Master's Degree Program at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Monterrey Campus. He is a member of the Mexican Chapter of the International Fiscal Association; the National Council of Corporate Lawyers; the Tax Research Committee of the Public Accountants Institute of the state of Nuevo León, the Tax Committee of the Mexican Institute of Finance Executives and the Mexican Bar Association. Mr. León-Santacruz represented the Tax Administration Service office at the Oficial Training Program for Iberoamerican Governments organized by the Fiscal Studies Institute of the Revenue Ministry of Spain. He has also participated as a speaker at several international seminars organized by the OECD, the IDB, the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit and the Derivatives Specialization Program offered at the Training Center of the Bolsa Mexicana de Valores (the Mexican Stock Exchange). He is a correspondent in Mexico of Tax Notes International. He joined the firm in 2002.

Gerardo Prado-Hernández

Gerardo Prado-Hernández received his law degree from the Universidad Iberoamericana Law School (1990). He holds a Master's degree from Georgetown University Law Center (1994). Mr. Prado-Hernández was a participant in the North American Free Trade Agreement Program offered at McGill University in Montreal, Canada in 1994. He has been a member of the National Association of Corporate Attorneys'; the Texas-Mexico Bar Association; the Collection Committee and co-founder of the Legal Training Program for the Northern region offices of Baker & McKenzie; a member of the Board of the Foreign Lawyers' Association of Georgetown University; he was also Vice President of the Student Council at the Iberoamericana University in Mexico. He has worked for several law firms, including Abascal y Moreno, S.C., Centro de Desarrollo Social de la Comunidad, S.C., and Jáuregui, Navarrete, Nader y Rojas S.C. For more than eight years he was an associate and local partner of the Baker & McKenzie law firm. Mr. Prado-Hernández's specialty is corporate law (incorporations, public offerings, mergers and acquisitions, privatizations and joint-venture agreements); banking and financial law (finance and loan agreements), guarantees on assets and accounts receivable; foreign investment law; general mercantile law (purchase/sale agreements, letters of credit, agency and distribution contracts, insurance contracts, leasing and licensing agreements); legislation for real estate development and construction; environmental and immigration law. He is a professor of Mercantile Corporations, Arbitration and Introduction to the Study of Law at the Universidad Cervantina, at the Instituto de Ciencias Jurídicas (Institute of Legal Sciences) in Monterrey and was a professor at the Green Hills School. He co-authored the Chapter on México of the 1995 publication by Baker & McKenzie on Legislation and Environmental Policy in Latin America; and was co-author of Conducting Business in Mexico, published by Juris Publishing Inc. (2001). He joined the firm in 2002.

Ernesto Silvas-Medina

Ernesto Silvas-Medina obtained his law degree at Universidad Panamericana (1994). He has a master's degree in Law from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (LL.M., 1998). He has worked as legal counsel for Sanluis Corporación, S.A. de C.V; Dirección Jurídica; Bufete Carrillo Gamboa, S.C., and was an associate for more than eight years with Baker & McKenzie. He is the author of the chapter on "Securities Markets" of the book "Conducting Business in México"published by Juris Publishing Inc. (2001). His expertise is in corporate and business law, the securities market, financial products, banking and finance, mergers and acquisitions, joint-venture agreements and foreign investment. His experience includes the negotiation and documentation of purchase/sale transactions, joint ventures in both private companies and those listed on the Mexican Stock Exchange, the dissolving of joint-venture agreements, corporate restructuring, national and international financing and credit transactions, as well as traditional or structured financing transactions, and the restructuring of bank and securities liabilities; counsel and documentation of estate planning, the planning of special structures of corporate government for family businesses and public companies; the preparation of contracts and agreements, corporate acts and requests for government authorizations related to public offerings of shares and debt instruments on the Mexican securities market and debt instrument programs abroad.

Mercedes Moore, Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce

Mercedes Moore is the Manager of International Trade and Director of the International Trade Assistance Center (ITAC) at the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce. Throughout her career, she has successfully developed high impact consultative capabilities interacting regularly with clients on international business development and import/export issues including risk mitigation, regulations, trade treaties, tax and financial issues, trade compliance, export/import training, researching markets, identifying opportunities, establishing distribution channels, and acting as an advocate and liaison for customers.

In addition, Ms. Moore helps ITAC clients gain access to financing, develop marketing plans, assemble financing proposals, conduct international market research, and find distributors overseas.

Ms. Moore received her Master in Business Administration from Capital University and her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from The Ohio State University, majoring in International Business and Finance. She is also a Certified Business Advisor of Small Business Development Centers.

Ms. Moore is highly specialized in economic development in the areas of trade promotion and direct foreign investment. Notable accomplishments include:

Martijn Steger, Director
Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter

Martijn Steger is the chair of Kegler Brown's international business practice, as well as a member of the firm's litigation and business, tax and securities practices. Martijn primarily assists clients with international business law issues and litigation. Some of his notable international business experience includes helping a client grow its international business eightfold through acquisitions and strategic alliances over the last ten years; and the defense of a lawsuit brought by a European company against two Fortune 500 American companies for infringement of a chemical patent.

Martijn earned his law degree from The Ohio State University College of Law in 1983, where he served as executive editor of The Ohio State University Law Journal. Martijn was also a Rotary International graduate fellow at the University of Sheffield Faculty of Law, Sheffield, England, 1978-1979. In addition, he holds a bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Miami University, where he majored in Interdisciplinary Studies and graduated summa cum laude.

Martijn is a member of the Columbus and the Ohio State Bar Associations and is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Ohio, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.

He also serves as president of the board of trustees and a member of the executive committee of the Columbus Council on World Affairs. Parking is available in the City Center Underground Parking Garage, located at 200 S. Third St. Take Elevator #4 to City Center Mall. Exit the Mall at the Ohio Theatre Esplanade. At the end of this walkway, turn left onto State St. Cross State St. at High St. Turn right onto High St. Head north on High St., crossing Broad St. Continue north on High St. for several minutes. The Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce offices will be on your left at 37 N. High St.
